An udhar khata register app replaces the paper notebook where you write who borrowed money from you and who you owe. The simplest version for personal use in Pakistan works inside WhatsApp: you type "Ali ko 5000 udhar diya", and the entry is saved under Ali's name with a running balance. You don't install anything, fill in forms, or later wonder whether it was 5,000 or 3,000.
This guide covers why personal udhaar is harder to track than shop credit, what a good udhar register needs to record, and how to move your existing paper khata onto WhatsApp in one evening.
Why Personal Udhaar Is So Easy to Lose Track Of
Shopkeepers have kept udhar khata registers for generations, and their system mostly works because it has rules. A customer buys on credit, the entry goes in the register, and the balance is settled at month-end. Personal udhaar between friends, cousins and colleagues usually has no rules at all.
Personal loans are hard to track for four reasons:
They happen at awkward moments. Your cousin calls from a hospital, a friend's motorcycle needs a repair, or a colleague is Rs. 3,000 short on rent. You send money on JazzCash in the middle of the conversation, and writing it down is the last thing on your mind.
They come back in pieces. Ali borrowed Rs. 10,000 in March. He returned Rs. 2,000 in April, Rs. 3,000 in June and Rs. 1,500 in August. Without a record, nobody knows whether he still owes Rs. 3,500 or Rs. 5,000, and the guess is usually wrong.
Both sides remember differently. Most udhaar fights in Pakistani families aren't about dishonesty. They come from two people who each remember a different number. A written record stops the argument before it starts.
Asking for money back feels rude. People wait, then forget, then feel resentful. A dated record lets you send a polite reminder with the exact amount and date instead of a vague "woh paise yaad hain?"
The fix is not a bigger notebook. It's a register you can update in the same moment you send the money.
What a Good Udhar Khata Register Needs to Record
Whether you use paper, Excel or an app, a personal udhar khata register needs five fields for every entry:
| Field | Why it matters | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Person's name | Balances are kept per person | Ali, Sara Khala, Bilal (office) |
| Direction | Did you give money or take it? | Diya (lent) / liya (borrowed) |
| Amount | Exact rupees, not rounded | Rs. 5,000 |
| Date | Needed for reminders and disputes | 3 November 2026 |
| Repayments | Partial returns reduce the balance | Rs. 2,000 returned on 15 November |
A paper register can hold all of this, but it can't add things up for you. If Ali has eight entries across four pages, you have to work out his balance by hand, and that's where mistakes creep in.
How an Udhar Khata App on WhatsApp Works
HissabAI is a personal finance assistant that runs inside WhatsApp. Udhaar tracking is one of its built-in features, alongside daily expense and income logging. You type in Roman Urdu, English or Urdu, the way you would text a friend:
| You type | What gets recorded |
|---|---|
| Ali ko 5000 udhar diya | You lent Rs. 5,000 to Ali |
| Sara se 3000 qarz liya | You borrowed Rs. 3,000 from Sara |
| Ali ne 2000 wapas kar diye | Ali repaid Rs. 2,000, so his balance drops to Rs. 3,000 |
| Sara ko 3000 wapas kiya | You repaid Sara and the debt is settled |
| mera udhar kitna hai | A list of every open balance, per person |
Each person has their own running balance. When Ali returns money in three instalments, HissabAI subtracts each one, so the remaining amount is always current.
If you type only "5000 udhar" without saying who or which way, HissabAI asks "Kisi ko diya ya kisi se liya?" instead of guessing. That small question prevents the most common register error: writing an entry in the wrong column.
Repayment reminders
You can also set a reminder for when money is due. Add the due date when you record the loan, for example "Ali ko 5000 udhar diya, 15 November ko wapas karega", and HissabAI reminds you on 15 November to collect it. Borrowed money works the same way: "Sara se 3000 qarz liya, 20 November ko wapas karna hai" reminds you to pay Sara back.
Udhaar doesn't distort your spending report
Lending Rs. 10,000 to your brother is not spending, because you expect it back. HissabAI keeps loans, loan repayments and money returned to you out of your monthly expense categories. If you lend money, your "this month I spent" figure still shows what you actually consumed, and it doesn't jump by Rs. 10,000.
The full list of commands is in the Roman Urdu user guide, and the English guide covers the same features.

A paper register is still fine if you lend money twice a year. Once you have three or more people with open balances, or anyone repaying in instalments, automatic totals save you real money and real arguments. If you prefer a spreadsheet, our free PKR Excel expense tracker template includes an udhaar sheet that calculates per-person balances.
How to Move Your Paper Udhar Khata to WhatsApp in One Evening
You don't need to re-enter years of history. You only need today's open balances.
Step 1: List every open balance. Go through your register and write one line per person, with the amount they still owe you or you still owe them. Ignore loans that were fully settled.
Step 2: Enter each balance as a single message. For each person who owes you, send "Ali ko 3500 udhar diya". For each person you owe, send "Bilal se 2000 qarz liya". Ten people take about two minutes.
Step 3: Check the totals. Type "mera udhar kitna hai" and compare the list with your paper notes. Fix anything that doesn't match by replying to the wrong entry with "delete" and sending it again.
Step 4: Keep the paper register as an archive. Write "moved to WhatsApp on [date]" on the last page. From now on, record new udhaar the moment the money moves.
Step 5: Include due dates where you have them. If Ahmed promised to repay by 30 November, enter his balance as "Ahmed ko 4000 udhar diya, 30 November ko wapas karega" and you'll get a reminder on that day.
Etiquette: How to Ask for Udhaar Back Without Spoiling the Relationship
A record makes the conversation easier, but you still have to have it. Some approaches work well in Pakistani families and friendships:
Use exact amounts and dates. "Bhai, 3 November ko jo 5000 diye thay, un mein se 2000 aa gaye, 3000 reh gaye hain" is factual and hard to argue with. "Tumne paise wapas nahi kiye" starts a fight.
Suggest instalments. Someone who can't repay Rs. 15,000 at once can usually manage Rs. 3,000 a month. Agree on the dates, and record each payment as it arrives so the remaining balance stays accurate.
Remind early, not late. A gentle message on the agreed date feels normal. A message six months later feels like an accusation.
Decide in advance what is a gift. If you're helping a sibling with university fees and don't expect it back, don't record it as udhaar. Log it as family support instead. Mixing gifts and loans in one register creates confusion later.
Lend what you can afford to lose. This is the oldest rule of udhaar for a reason. If losing the money would break your monthly budget, a record won't fix the problem. Keep your own emergency fund separate from money you lend.
Personal Udhaar vs Business Udhaar: Choosing the Right App
Pakistan has several popular khata apps, including Udhaar Book and DigiKhata. They are built mainly for shopkeepers who extend credit to customers and send SMS payment reminders to them. They're good at that job.
If you're an individual tracking loans to friends and family, a business khata app is often more than you need. It also leaves out the other half of your finances: your daily spending, salary and budget. A personal register works better when it lives alongside your expense tracking, so you can see, for example, that you lent Rs. 25,000 this year while saving only Rs. 18,000.
We compare business khata apps and personal ledgers in detail in Digital Bahi Khata for Personal Use.
Udhar Khata App Privacy and Safety
Udhaar records include other people's names, so privacy matters. With HissabAI:
- Only you can see your udhaar records. The people you name are not contacted or notified.
- HissabAI never asks for your bank login, card number or wallet PIN. You only type the amounts yourself.
- You can export your records as CSV from the web dashboard at any time.
- Sending "delete my account" permanently removes your transactions, udhaar records and reminders.
How do I track udhar given to friends and family?
The simplest way to track udhar given to friends and family is to record each loan the moment you send it, with the person's name, amount and date. On WhatsApp with HissabAI, you type "Ali ko 5000 udhar diya" and it keeps a running balance for Ali. Partial repayments like "Ali ne 2000 wapas kiye" reduce his balance automatically.
Is there a free udhar khata app for personal use in Pakistan?
Several khata apps in Pakistan, such as DigiKhata and Udhaar Book, offer free tiers. They are designed mainly for shops and business customers. HissabAI is built for personal use, combines udhaar with daily expense tracking on WhatsApp, and offers a 7-day free trial before plans starting at Rs. 499 for three months.
Can I record udhar in Urdu or Roman Urdu?
Yes. HissabAI understands Roman Urdu ("Ali ko 5000 udhar diya"), English ("lent 5000 to Ali") and Urdu script. You can also send a voice note, and it shows what it heard before saving.
Does lending money count as an expense in my budget?
No. Money you lend is an asset you expect to get back, not spending. HissabAI keeps loans and repayments out of your monthly spending categories, so your expense report reflects what you actually consumed. If a loan is never repaid, you can decide later to write it off.
How do I remind someone to return my udhar politely?
Use the exact amount and date from your record, and suggest instalments if the full amount is difficult. For example: "3 November ko 5000 diye thay, 3000 baaqi hain, kya 15 tarikh tak 1500 ho sakte hain?" Recording a due date with the loan means HissabAI reminds you on that day, so you can raise it at the right time instead of months later.
